In Clark County, Las Vegas: Shortly before Brianna Rukavina was to install a pool safety fence around the family pool, she said her 1-year-old daughter fell into the pool and drowned.
Ever since, the mother has made it her mission to educate parents on the dangers of having an easily accessible pool -- and to help those parents who can’t afford to buy a fence.
“A lot of parents understand the dangers,” she said. “What it is (is) they cannot afford these amazing swim classes out there. Or they can’t afford to put a fence around their pool … (So) it still happens. We were well aware of the dangers in our pool.”
The American Red Cross offered parents some tips for summer safety:
• Enroll children and infants in swim classes;
• Always have a designated adult watching children;
• Keep life-saving gear nearby;
• Learn CPR;
• And, install a safety fence around the pool.
Pools built in Clark County after 2003 are required to have safeguards built into them, but earlier pools were grandfathered in under the less-restrictive rules.
